Naked Raku Experience Course

£45.00

Description

Naked raku is an exciting and effective way of creating one off pieces.  Firstly, you will make a vessel – hand built (or thrown if you have already done one of our throwing workshops).  This can be a vase, pot or sculpture.  Naked raku works best on smooth sides, so we will explore forms for your make as well as learning how to polish your creation.  It will then be taken for bisque firing before the big day.  We will look at various ‘ingredients’ that you can use on your vessels.  On the day of the firing, we heat the vessels to 1000 degrees outside in our car park.  Once hot enough we open the kiln and take out the glowing ceramics.  These will be put on a board for you to then use your ‘ingredients’ – burning them onto the clay body.  Materials that work well include horse hair, lavender, peacock and other bird feathers, sugar and salt.  These combustibles burn on contact with the hot ceramic and create amazing effects on the side as well as silhouettes  from the feathers.  We wait for the ceramics to cool and then polish them… you can then take them home the same day.

This workshop is for beginners or those that have worked with ceramics before.  Please wear old clothes or those you don’t mind getting clay on.

There will be refreshments available throughout the workshop, including some cake.

Making day is 28th April 2026 6-8pm (or any Thursday evening at Clay Club) then we have a raku firing day each month, so you can choose when is best for you.
£45 including all materials.
